Avoiding the Trap of Temptation
The trap of temptation stays set, what has to be put on the trap to entice you? What is your bait?
Baits
1. Sexual sins
• Proverbs 23:26-28 “My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. For a
harlot is a deep pit and a seductress is a narrow well. She also lies in wait as for a victim,
and increases the unfaithful among men.”
• Proverbs 6:32 “Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so
destroys his own soul. Wounds and dishonor will he get and his reproach will not be wiped
away.”
2. Greed - a love of money
• Luke 12:15 “And He (Jesus) said to them take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s
life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
3. Arrogance - Pride & power
• Luke 22:25-26 “And He said to them, the kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them,
and those who exercise authority are called benefactors, BUT NOT SO AMONG YOU, on the
contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs,
as he who serves.”
• Luke 17:10 “So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded,
say, We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.”
4. Alcohol/drugs
• Prov. 23:19 “Hear, my son, and be wise; And guide your heart in the way. Do not mix with
winebibbers or with gluttonous eaters of meat; for the drunkard and the glutton will come
to poverty and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.”
5. Our Temper – anger and hatred
• Eph. 4:31 “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, loud quarreling, and evil speaking be put away
from you, with all malice.”
6. Our Tongue – words
• Prov. 12:22 “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His
delight.”
• We can have an obscene tongue. We sin by using profanity.
• Ex. 20:7 “You shall not take the name of your Lord in vain.”
• We can have a filthy or obscene tongue. We use course and dirty language.
• Eph. 5:4 “But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not be named among
you, as it is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting which
are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.”
• We can have a loose tongue. We gossip and spread rumors about people.
• Prov. 16:28 “A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates the best of friends.”
7. Apathy – Lazy in work, complacent when it comes to responsibilities, disconnected when it
comes to relationships.
• Prov. 10:4-5 “He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes
rich. He who gathers in the Summer is a wise son; he who sleeps in harvest is a son who
causes shame.”
8. An Unhealthy Appetite for food, for fun - based on pleasure.
• II Tim. 3:4-5 “….lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness, but
denying its power. And from such people turn away.”
• We all have to answer the question “What is excessive in our lives?”
9. A negative, critical Attitude
• Num. 11:1 “Now when the people complained, it displeased the Lord, for the Lord heard it
and His anger was aroused. So the fire of the Lord burned among them and consumed some
in the outskirts of the camp.
10. Corrupt Thinking – Our Thought Life
• Prov 19:28 - A corrupt witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.
Sow a thought, reap an act
Sow an act, reap a habit
Sow a habit, reap a character
Sow a character, reap a destiny
Traps
Realize the source from which temptations come into your life and the purpose he (the evil one) wants you to respond to it.
• James 1:13-16 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot
be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14But each one is tempted when he
is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15Then, when desire has conceived, it gives
birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 16Do not be deceived, my
beloved brethren.
God does not tempt. Satan tempts as he want to destroy us, and devour us
• I Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring
lion, seeking whom he may devour.
• John 10:10 "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come
that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
• Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of
wickedness in the heavenly places.
Recognize the Strategy being used by the evil one.
• To be strong against the enemy we must be smart about the enemy.
• James 1:14 “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.”
• It starts with a DESIRE.
• These desires stem from our flesh, our eyes and our pride.
• I John 2:15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the
love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of
the eyes, and the pride of life-is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is
passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
• There is a seed of DOUBT. Has God said?
• Followed by DECEPTION. “You will not surely die.” Enticed – to bait the hook
• Thus leading to a call for a DECISION.
• and the Decision the evil one wants is DISOBEDIENCE
Top Ten Ways Satan Tempts
10. He wants to delay our work for Christ as well as make it more difficult, bringing into our lives persecution and suffering.
• I Cor. 16:9 For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many
adversaries.
• 2 Cor. 4:8-9 “We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not
in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.”
• 2 Thess. 3:1-2 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be
glorified, just as it is with you, and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked
men; for not all have faith.
9. He wants us to be distracted so that we become unfruitful.
• Luke 8:14 "Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out
and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity."
8. He wants us to be discouraged and depressed which ultimately brings about our defeat.
• Neh 4 - When the work became hard, long and difficult for the workers of the wall, they
became discouraged and wanted to quit.
• “You do not determine a man’s greatest by his talent or his wealth, but rather by what it
takes to discourage Him.” - favorite quote of Jerry Falwell
7. He wants us to have doctrinal confusion.
• Paul taught the Ephesians that they needed to be established in their faith so they would not
be carried away with every wind of doctrine. Jude tells us to contend for the faith.
• Eph. 4:11 - 14 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists,
and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for
the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the
knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness
of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with
every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting
6. He wants us to be divided. He strives to prevent unity in the body.
• John 17:20-21 "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through
their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also
may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.”
5. He wants us to derail us, seeking to disgrace us, to deny the Lord and disengage from the work of the Lord.
• I Tim. 3:7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, so that
he will not fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil.
• Luke 22:31-34 And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he
may sift you as wheat. 32"But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and
when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren." 33But he said to Him, "Lord, I
am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death." 34Then He said, "I tell you, Peter,
the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me."
• 2 Tim 2:24-26 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach,
patient, 25in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them
repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26and that they may come to their senses and
escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
4. He does not want us to live dependent on God, encouraging us to live self- sufficient life. He strives to prevent prayer.
• A prayerless Christian is a powerless Christian & a prayerless church is a powerless church.
• Rev. 3:17 "Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’
and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.
3. He wants us to doubt God. He wants us to believe that God is untrustworthy.
• He likes to show up when bad things happen to good people and ask if God is so loving,
then why did He allow this to happen?
2. He wants to discredit us before God.
• Rev. 12:10 “Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and
the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our
brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.”
• Job 1: 9-11 So Satan answered the LORD and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing? "Have
You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on
every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in
the land." But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse
You to Your face!“
• In Genesis Satan told a lie to man about God. In Job Satan told a lie to God about man.
1. He wants to deceive us, especially in the area of who God is and what God has said as he ultimately wants more than anything for us to disobey God.
• John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He
was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no
truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and
the father of it.
• Satan is a liar. He questioned Eve in the garden concerning what God had said and then told
her that God had lied to her.
The Guard
I Cor. 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
Rom 6:13-14 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
You have been given the ability to say NO to sin and Yes to righteousness through the grace of God. HOW?
Right Principles + Right People + Right Places = Right Actions
Right Principles
1. Renew your mind with Scripture - We need to feed our minds and hearts the Word of God
• Rom. 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present
your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2And
do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that
you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
• Ps. 119:11 “Your Word have I hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”
• Matt. 4:3-11 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God,
command that these stones become bread." 4But He answered and said, "It is written, ‘Man
shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’"
5Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6and
said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give
His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your
foot against a stone.’" 7Jesus said to him, "It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD
your God.’" 8Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed
Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9And he said to Him, "All these things I
will give You if You will fall down and worship me." 10Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you,
Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve."
11Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
(James 4:7 - Submit to God – resist the Devil and he will flee you.)
2. Resolve with a statement to be victorious over this temptation
• We should be aware that just knowing a Bible verse will not keep us from sinning. We will be
victorious over a temptation when we take the Bible verse and establish a conviction.
• Daniel 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion
of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief
of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
• Job 31:1 "I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young
woman?
• Temptations must be met with convictions.
3. Replace the wrong thought
• Phil 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence
and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.
Practice for when temptation comes:
1. Quote your conviction
2. Quote your verse that is the foundation of that convoction
3. Replace the thought by quoting verses based on Jesus and what he did on the cross.
4. Run – The Victorious Christian flees (runs) from temptation.
• II Tim 2:22 “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those
who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
• I Cor. 10:14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
• In Gen. 39:12 we have Joseph as our role model. He ran from temptation.
5. Remove things that fuel the temptation, especially bitterness
• Heb. 12:14-16 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the
Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness
springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; lest there be any fornicator
or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.
6. Renounce ungodly thinking that seeks to influence your actions. How we think is going to effect how we act.
• II Cor. 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the
weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,
casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of
God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ
• Ps. 1:1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the
path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful
• You are going to have to choose carefully your music and your movies. You need a filter.
• Phil. 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever
things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are
of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on
these things.
• Ps. 101:3 I will set no wicked thing before my eyes.
7. Restrain your flesh in every area. Be hard on yourself.
• Rom. 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its
lusts.
• I Cor. 9:24-27 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the
prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 25And everyone who competes for the prize
is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an
imperishable crown. 26Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one
who beats the air. 27But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have
preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
8. Rely on the Spirit of God - We are to be filled with the Spirit of God and walk in the Spirit.
• Gal. 5:16 says “Walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
9. Remind yourself of the results of saying yes to sin.
• Choices have consequences. For every action there is a reaction.
• James 1:15 “Then when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin when it is full
grown, brings forth death.”
• Numbers 32:23 "But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the LORD;
and be sure your sin will find you out.
10. We need to Remember who we are now that we are a Christian
• II Cor. 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed
away; behold, all things have become new.
• After his salvation he was walking down the street one day and he saw a woman – a
prostitute that he had been with a number of times. He immediately crossed over to the
other side in order to avoid her – very afraid that he would not be able to resist her
appeals. When she saw him she called out to him but he paid no attention to her. She
called louder – yet he continue to walk without looking her way. She yelled – Augustine it
is I - to which Augustine turned and said to her Yes, but It is NO Longer I
11. Repent of known sins
• Far to many people are not winning over sin because they have not turned from their sin.
They like their sin. Victory begins with repentance.
• Revelation 2:5 "Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first
works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless
you repent.
• Prov. 28:13 He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes
them will have mercy.
• 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
12. Refuse to stay defeated and depressed if you fall. (Prov. 24:16)
Right People
1. Have Righteous Relationships - We must spend time with the right people.
• II Tim 2:22 “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those
who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
• 1 Cor. 15:33, "Do not be deceived: Evil company corrupts good habits."
• Prov. 12:26, "A righteous man should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked
leads them astray."
2. Recruit accountability partner.
• Accountability is the best friend of integrity.
• James 5:16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may
be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
3. Be open to Receiving Rebukes.
• Being able to win over temptation means being willing to allow someone to warn you of
potential danger as well as receive rebukes when someone has discovered that you stepped
out of line. How you receive rebukes will determine in large measure if you will be a winner.
• Ps. 141:5 Let the righteous strike me; it shall be kindness. And let him rebuke me. It shall
be as excellent oil; Let my head not refuse it.”
• Proverbs 15:31 The ear that hears the rebukes of life Will abide among the wise.
• Prov. 12:1 Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, But he who hates correction is stupid.
Right Places
1. Think about where you go
• Wise Christians will not put themselves in places where they are prone to fail.
2. Learn to ask good questions.
3. Remove yourself from wrong places.
• I Cor. 10:13 No Temptation has overtaken you expect such as common to man: but God is
faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the
temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
